A History Of Star Wars Lego Sets ? The Year 2002

Lego has produced Star Wars sets for over ten years and in their third year of the licence, the company began to release sets from the second of the Star Wars Prequels, Attack Of the Clones.

Released in 2002, the sequel to The Phantom Menace was well received and demand was high for Star Wars Lego in this year. Lego continued the broad range of sets, releasing 22 in all. These included a number of Ultimate Collector and Technic Sets as well as their regular range of models based on both prequel and original trilogy films.

In regards to long-term collecting interests the most notable sets of the year included the Ultimate Collector Star Destroyer (10030). The set came in at 3096 pieces and measured 37’inches long by 23’inches wide. At the time of release, it was the largest Star Wars Lego set and indeed the largest Lego set ever produced. It still commands high prices on the secondary market.

Demand has also remained high for the Republic Gunship (7163), the first of its kind released in Lego format and the first set to contain clone troopers. The ship featured in Attack Of the Clones as both a transport and attack gunship and the set, while small by today’s standards at 693 pieces was a popular with fans who wanted to start their clone army.

The most enduring figure of the year would have to be the figure of Jango Fett, featured in the set Jango Fett’s Slave 1 (7153). Surprisingly Jango Fett has never been repeated in a Lego set since this first release and so the set and the figure demand high prices in today’s market. The set also featured the unique figure Boba Fett as a boy. While cute, baby Boba has not proven to be as popular as his father.

Other sets worth noting from 2002 include Final Duel and Final Duel II (7200 and 7201) two very small sets that attracted alot of attention for their minifigs and parts and were very well priced at $ 6.99 each.

Similarly priced were Jedi Defence I and Jedi Defence II (7203 and 7204) which offered similar value for Prequel Trilogy figures and settings.

Other sets in this year included Ewok Attack (7193) which was the first appearance of the furry warriors from Return Of the Jedi, Jedi Duel (7103) which remained collectable for years afterwards because of the Yoda and Dooku figures and the Tusken Raider Encounter (7113) which featured Anakin and the first (and only) Tusken Raiders released.

2002 was a great year for Star Wars Lego as it expanded the universe even further, allowing fans and kids to play with and collect more of the significant moments of the films.

A History of Star Wars Lego Sets – The Year 2001

The year 2001 was the third year that Lego released sets based around George Lucas’ science fiction fantasy, Star Wars. With the incredible success for the first wave of sets, released in late 1999 to coincide with the release of Episode One The Phantom Menace, Lego’s second wave came just over a year later.

There were a total of ten sets released in 2001, and along with regular sets the company also started releasing what it called The Ultimate Collector Series (UCS), larger models that contained more pieces and displayed more details than the standard sets. These UCS sets were sold without minifigures and were designed to be shelf display pieces rather than play sets.

The first two UCS sets were a bust of The Phantom Menace’s villain Darth Maul (10018) and a large replica of the iconic original trilogy ship the Tantive IV(10019). Also known as the Rebel Blockade Runner, Princess Leia’s starship is the very first vehicle seen in the Star Wars movies (seem in Episode 4 A New Hope) as it flies overhead of the camera view, being pursued by an even larger Star Destroyer. While both Darth Maul and the Tantive IV sold well it is the latter that has earned a place in collector’s hearts and is very hard to come by now on the secondary market.

Lego also released two technic based Star Wars sets in 2001, a stormtrooper (8008) and the protocol droid C3PO (8007). Both figures stood about 30 cm tall and had minimal action features. Although Lego released a couple more of these technic figures in later years the line never really took off with collectors and these can still be found for good prices.

The largest regular set released in this year was entitled Watto’s Junkyard (7186).

With 443 pieces it came with the rare Watto and Aldar Beedo figures that have not come out since this set. Despite the rarity of these two minifigures it had little to recommend it. The next biggest set however remained a popular and sought after set for years after.

The Imperial Shuttle (7166) was very popular with fans and was a nicely accurate representation of the iconic ship from the Original trilogy. The ship also came with two very rare Royal Guard figures that fans clamoured for while the vehicle itself was very playable, large enough to fit figures and nice to fly around the room. The shuttle would come out in two more Lego incarnations in later years.

Smaller sets from 2001 included Droid Escape (7106) which included first appearances of R2-D2 and C3po in minifigure form, an AT-ST (7127) which was a fairly menial design but came with the first Chewbacca figure, a Battle Droid Carrier (7126) and the iconic Tie Fighter (7146) which fans appreciated could match the earlier release of the X-Wing.

2001 was another successful year for Star Wars Lego and paved the way for the 2002 wave which would see the release of double the amount of sets in this franchise, including sets from the latest film, Episode Two Attack Of the Clones.

A History of Star Wars Lego Sets : The Year 1999

Lego has been making building and construction toys for decades. Based in Denmark, the company started producing their popular brick based sets with a Star Wars theme in 1999, around the time of the release of The Phantom Menace. Originally Lego’s rights to produce Star Wars sets went for 10 years, until 2008, but due to the mutual success both parties experienced with the pairing, the licence was extended again.

When Lego started to design and make Star Wars sets, it was the first time that it had taken on an intellectual property product outside its own walls. Star Wars seemed to be an obvious choice because of the resurgence in popularity due to the prequel trilogy and the fact that the science fiction franchise already had numerous licensing deals with their name attached to everything from breakfast cereal to shampoo.

There were a total of 14 Lego sets released that first year, eight of which were from the Phantom Menace and the remaining from the Original Trilogy, including the iconic X-Wing fighter, Luke’s Landspeeder, Y-Wing and Tie Fighters and the Snowspeeder. From the Phantom Menace notable sets included two podracing sets, the Gungan Sub and the Naboo Starfighter.

Quite a few of these sets have been re-released in the years since this inaugural release, often times with significant redesigns and new, custom created pieces.

The figures from 1999 bear mentioning because they were in the traditional yellow form of the minifigure, that is with yellow face and hand pieces. In addition it was the first time that fans had a chance to see film characters represented as little Lego men and most were impressed with the results.

The two podracing sets from this wave are unique in that it is the only time that the significant prequel character of Padme Amidala has appeared in Lego sets.

Many of these original sets and figures have become collector’s items and though there are far more specialist pieces than there were at the time of release, these sets still stand up as faithful and fun interpretations of the Star Wars world.

Lego Star Wars Slave 1 Lego Sets

That was originative back then. Now, Legos has churned out bricks for Star Wars, Bionicle, and in many cases techie ones that move with batteries, pink one’s for girls, they’ve made people, houses, critters, and all types of transportation. The sky is the limit – it appears – actually it’s the floor. All the floor. The late night, screaming kid, darkish hall, darkish room, matted eyes, searing pain of hard plastic in a soft foot that goes with Legos. My favourite component of Legos is whenever they are all cleaned up (just kidding). Oh sure, they’re actually cool and my son loves them.

“Aren’t you a bit of short for a stormtrooper?” – Leia
“Do or do not. There is certainly no try.” – Yoda
“It’s a trap!” – Admiral Ackbar

The most enduring figure of the yr would ought to turn into the determine of Jango Fett, featured within the set Jango Fett’s Slave 1 (. Amazingly Jango Fett has not ever been repeated in a Lego set since this primary launching and for that reason the set and the figure necessity high costs in the present market. The set also featured the unique determine Boba Fett as a boy. Whilst cute, infant Boba has not confirmed to be as common as his father.

The ship good looks rather corresponding to the earlier incarnation, save for the colors which be noticed as reducing to very bright variations of their cinematic counterparts.

Expanded Universe sets have been in plans for the longer term established on the fictional background of the Star Wars universe.
Most of the Expanded Universe facts comes from Star Wars associated books, comics, video games and other media which can take place everywhere from 25,000 yrs.

in advance of The Phantom Menace to 137 yrs. soon after Return of the Jedi, so LEGO designers have a lot of background to decide on from.

The Boba Fett determine has been featured in seven sets ever since 2000 and has also had an excessively desirable white mannequin manufactured for promotional purposes.
