Sony Ericsson has recently announced one of their latest additions to the XPERIA range of smartphones. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play is an Android smartphone with a difference; it has a slide out keypad specifically designed for gaming, which anyone who has ever picked up a PlayStation controller will recognise.
Apart from this feature which sets the handset apart from its competition, it is also a fully functioning Android smartphone of the highest level.
The handset measures 119x 62x 16 millimetres and weighs in at 175 grams. A 4 inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen is on hand to display up to 16M individual colours within 480x 854 pixels. As the phone is aimed largely with gamers in mind, it boasts touch sensitive gaming controls (reminiscent of the analogue controls on the PlayStation controller), as well as the PlayStation style buttons for ultimate gaming enjoyment. The screen additionally includes proximity and accelerometer sensors and supports multi-touch input.
400 MB of internal storage is provided alongside 380 MB RAM although there is also a microSD slot with a pre-installed 8 GB memory card. This should prove ample for storing music tracks, video clips and of course games, also on the occasion that further storage should be required it can be replaced with a memory card of up to 32 GB, significantly increasing the available storage capacity.
In order to keep the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play connected to cellular networks and the Internet, both EDGE & GPRS are called upon although a faster Internet connection can be achieved in areas with 3G coverage thanks to HSDPA providing fast download speeds. Wi-Fi connectivity is also included which allows users to gain an even faster Internet browsing experience whenever they have access to local wireless networks. Micro USB, Bluetooth and DLNA at to the list of connectivity features.
As well as an impressive gaming device, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play is also a highly competent cameraphone. This is thanks to a 5 mega pixel offering which operates at 2592x 1944 pixels resulting in fantastic quality still images. Touch focus, Autofocus and image stabilisation are included alongside an LED flash and geo-tagging, the latter of which utilises GPS to automatically record where the camera was used. As an added bonus, the camera can also be used to shoot WVGA quality video footage.
Android v2.3 (Gingerbread), the latest version of the software, is the operating system of choice and this works alongside a powerful 1GHz processor to provide a lightning fast user interface and also provides the power necessary to run demanding applications and games.
Numerous multimedia and entertainment apps are included as standard within the Sony Ericsson XPERIA play. Of course, this is the ideal choice for those who are into their video games, but it also serves as a highly functional Android smartphone and comes with all the specifications you would expect from such a device.
