a large-sized TG&Y bag retrieved from an old trunk (used as lining) hiding in the back rooms of a thrift store occupying an old 80s style fashion store. the store itself at one time being a perimeter store to a split-level mall in the ultra-modern/mid-modern style.
for someone like myself this is the lost dutchman’s gold staring me in the face – this is being able to see our galaxy’s shape from "above."
i love ephemera. not in-of-itself, but because, often, ephemeratica captures the nuance of human social mediums/culture more than the more obvious and usually cared-for items.
i have scanned this image with a 90 degree angle registry. meaning that i lined up the bag’s straight edges with the scanner to get the most accurate documentation of the angle of the TG&Y logo. i know why i would want this; no, not necessarily to recreate period pieces (though i’d do that too) but to have that knowledge committed to my intuition – my gut – so that my gut is fed a rounded nutritious meal of observation.
why do that? who cares?
the nuances add up. we are bombarded and absorbing these bits constantly. some bits we are more conscious or aware of; others, subconcious. but they are there, enhancing how we see the world, how we appreciate. giving us reflection on the world, on ourselves – each other.
that is what is embodied in something like this bag. . . existence.
[dimensions of entire bag – image is partial]
height : approximately 26 inches
width : 17 3/4 inches
depth : 6.5 inches (when expanded)
opening : uneven by 11/16"
[description and observations]
the bag is uneven at its terminal end probably for ease of opening when bagging merchandise. the "ascending" logo is not even in ascension – but so far i cannot find where the printing pattern stops or starts.
TG&Y was part staple to my growings. i played polaris there (amoung many other video games), i bothered mom and bought toys there, garbage pail kids 3-packs, all kinds of bit and thing.
i wonder what was in this bag. no receipt means the possibilities are endless.
